Pathway of Help-Seeking Behavior of Schizophrenics in Korea


Abstract
This is a field survey of the pathway of help-seeking behavior and concept of the mental illness in one rural area.
The survey was conducted to 31 outpatients in psychiatric clinic(Group A), 38 inpatients in mental hospital(Group B) and 53 patients in asylum(Group C).
Method of survey in this study was two methods. One method that is for pathway of help-seeking behavior, is the semistructured interview form by the reserchers. Survey of attitude and recognition to schizophrenic disease was the structured form
of
Terashima version originally constructed by Star and to depression of Wig's form ; age, educational level, economic status of all groups were controlled by the same criteria.
Demographic data of the patient between 3 Groups significance for age, occupation, economic status ' group A is the youngest and group C is the eldest. For occupation, group A have more professional occupation and group C have more manual labor,
farmer
and no job than the other group.
Frequency and type of pathway of helpseeking behavior is complicated and not unification ; frequency of group A is 3.3 times, group B is 2.7 times and group C is 2.3 times.
Type of help-seeking behavior are modern medicine, substitued popular medicine (herbs, health food, religion and exorcism) and asylum. Group A use numerouse help-seeking behavior and more substituted popular medicine than the other groups, Group
C
use
more asylum and exorcism than group A, B, But group B is repeated admition in mental hospital than other groups.
The patient was compulsory committed to asylum by official(15%) and family(20%) and solicited commtment by family(64%). About 70% of saylum's patients have not visitiong during recent 1 year by family members.
Identification rate of Star's two hypothetical cases(schizophrenia, paranoid thpe and simple type) and Wig's two hypothetical cases(schizophrenia, paranoid type and simple type) and Wig's two hypotheticalcases(depression, endogenouse type and
reactive
type) were ; identification rate of group A's care-taker is 100%for paranoid schizophrenia, 61.3% for simple schizophrenia, 74.2% for endogen ouse depression, 25.8% for neurotic depression and group B is 100%, 48.6%, 74.3%, 20% and general
publics
is
78.4%, 40.6%, 51.1%, 2205%. In comparison with the previouse study, significant increase in identification rate to paranoid schizophrenia, simple schizophrenia and endogenouse depression. But neurotic depression do not change in comparison with
the
previouse study of neurosis.
And respondents are changed to scientific and psychological attitude of etiological and treatment modalities who recognized the hypothetical case as mental illness.
The result of this study that prognostic view of mental illness is changed into more optimistic idea and more understanding, and accurate knowledge and attitude toward mental illness have improved than the past time.
